Surreal Fantasy Landscape Paintings

The surrealist flair of Cheryl's work came about organically. In 2021 after spending hundreds of hours working daily to improve her technical skills Cheryl's work began to develop a unique voice, a style all her own. This style continues to develop and grow as her interests become interwoven on the canvas. The once voluminous organic shapes used to represent those found in nature are softening like the cool mist rising from the lake at daybreak. The boldness of colour remains and her curiousity with light and shadow. The surrealist work produced by Cheryl combines organic shapes and subjects with a fantastical view.

Named after a song by Pink Floyd, High Hopes was the first large surrealist painting I created. Born from a simple pencil sketch and an imagined island of rock with hidden caves and dwellings on a beautiful clear lake, this painting has been in several exhibitions including the 2024 Open Juried Exhibition of the Ontario Society of Artists.

Look closely, you’ll find a waterfall spontaneously springs from the base of a tower. A small cave sits front and centre, a nice place to stay the night.

This beautiful cool palette surreal painting will become a focal point of your home and the subject of many lively conversations.

This original painting is 36” high and 36” wide with a depth of 1.5”. The artwork wraps halfway around the edges which are then finished in black. This provides a clean, finished, high-end look and makes the work ready to display without the need for a frame.

Ever since first seeing Lake Superior in 2018 it has captured my imagination time and again. It calls to me. This large work combines oils and inks in a rhythmic flowing composition ablaze with the morning sun.

Part of my surrealist styled work, I crafted a hut for the weary traveler to sit and stay awhile, enjoying the solitude and sunrise. I also experimented here with pieces of a story; the road north in the lower left, the majestic pines here created oversized for impact, and the small lodging, humble yet welcoming.

This powerful piece will draw you in time and again.

Winter 2024 I entertained a new approach using both water based inks and oil paint. I wanted to be able to layer colour and form while emphasizing an overall glow in the work. I also began a mini-series exploring the relationship between human and nature habitats. I strongly believe we can find a way to live harmoniously with nature. We simply need to become part of the circle of life that nature maintains rather than pushing against it.

In Edge of Dawn, I’ve built a cluster of buildings, a homestead, on the edge of a cliff overlooking a sunlit lake. The oversized tree both holds and protects the homestead.
