Northern Ontario Landscape Paintings

In 2018 I travelled further North in Ontario than I had before. Since then I return every year, often several times during the year to breath in the majesty of the North. The landscapes I find in Northern Ontario both excite and inspire me to take out brushes and paint and explode those emotions of “wow” onto the canvas. I hope that my enthusiasm for the wild landscapes of Ontario North will inspire you, lift you up and bring you joyful memories of the cottage, cabin, trails and campgrounds of Northern Ontario.

During an extended visit in Whitefish Falls in 2022 I explored the area including Chutes Provincial Park found in Massey Ontario. If you are travelling the Trans Canada Highway heading west from Sudbury take a stop at this park. The Big Chute and Seven Sisters Rapids on the Aux Sable River are main features of Chutes Provincial Park. If you have time, walk the whole trail to see several falls and rapids, beautiful Precambrian rock formations, Jackpine and red pine and cross 2 bridges along the way.

This scene featured here I captured the morning light glow of the early signs of Autumn, the colour “kiss” that signals the start of autumn in Northern Ontario.

The beautiful teal and lilac palette will complement any decor from a warm wall to a cool theme.

This original painting is 30” high and 24” wide with a depth of 1.5”. The artwork wraps halfway around the edges which are then finished in black. This provides a clean, finished, high-end look and makes the work ready to display without the need for a frame.

During my many visits in Northern Ontario I have accumulated a significant library of photos I have taken of scenes I witnessed during my travels. Sometimes, especially in winter, I will take several scenes and re-imagine them, creating a unique experience for the viewer. This scene Gneiss Winter (pronounced “Nice” Winter, shows an early snowfall along the edges of a river emptying into the bay. You can see the ice beginning to accumulate along the shoreline. You can almost feel the first chill of winter in the air.

Gneiss is a type of rock commonly found in Northern Ontario and is featured prominently here in this work.

The beautiful warm ruddy rocks contrast nicely with the crisp blue water and ice and will complement any decor from a warm wall to a cool theme.

This original painting is 36” high and 36” wide with a depth of 1.5”. The artwork wraps halfway around the edges which are then finished in black. This provides a clean, finished, high-end look and makes the work ready to display without the need for a frame.

Often I will drive north just to see a change of seasons. In 2022 I traveled north to see the colour on the landscape. Of course, I had to visit a favourite spot, Chutes Provincial Park. During that visit I was able to capture a few photos featuring the colourful trees that lined the riverbanks.

This scene featured here captures the drama of the gold and bronze leaves set against the cool blues of the water and sky. This painting is big and bold and will become an accent piece in your home or office.
